Election Update for the June 23 primary

The primary election this year is June 23. Because there are no local or independent races this time only registered Democrats and Republicans can get a ballot for this election. If you are a registered Independent or Third-Party voter there is no race to vote for. If you changed your party affiliation after December 31, 2019, you are not eligible to vote in this primary election. If you want to check your registration status go to GoVoteKY.com. If you are not registered to vote the deadline to registrar for this primary is May 26. You can go to GoVoteKY.com to register.

Because of the global Covid-19 pandemic, Frankfort has changed some aspects of the election process. Every registered voter in the State of Kentucky will receive a postcard setting forth information on how to apply for an absentee ballot. The State Board of Elections will have an online portal available by May 22. The voter will go through a series of online prompts to identify themselves using date of birth and social security number. They will use their driver’s license number to sign or sign digitally using an I-pad or other device. A ballot will then be mailed to the voter with a prepaid postage envelope to return to our office. Please read the instructions carefully as a signature is required on each envelope. Once you have applied for a ballot the voter will be able to track the location of their ballot on the online portal.

If you have already applied for or received an absentee ballot you do not have to apply for another one.

If you would rather not mail the ballot back to us, we will have a secure drop box in the lobby of the county building at 1098 Monmouth Street, Newport and another one outside the Sheriff office at the lower level, 8330 West Main Street, Alexandria. These boxes will be available after June 1.

From June 8 to June 22 in-person absentee voting will be available by appointment only for voters who need the ADA voting machine or are unable to receive a ballot by mail. A voter will need to call our election office to schedule an appointment. Appointments will be scheduled at 5-minute intervals during regular business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 8 to June 22 and on Saturday, June 20 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. Our election office number is 859 292-3885.

There will still be an election day on Tuesday, June 23. However, because of state regulations, we can only have one location open that day. Campbell County’s polling location will be centrally located at Cold Spring Baptist Church, 4410 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, KY 41076.

We strongly encourage our voters to take advantage of the state’s online portal. It is secure and easy to use. If you do have to go to the poll on election day be warned there could be a long line. Wear a mask and observe social distancing to protect our poll workers, your fellow citizens and yourself.

If you have any questions please contact our election office at 859 292-3885.
